Dzūkijos VVG
The Lazdijai area is a part of southern Lithuania, called Dzukija. The region has long been known for its beautiful natural environment, unspoiled by industry. More than 150 lakes are located in the district. The largest of them are Dusia ( 2337 ha), Metelys (1299 ha) and Seirijis (503 ha). Dusia lake is especially liked by sailing enthusiasts. The largest river in Lithuania, the Nemunas, flows along the edge of the district, while the Baltoji Ancia and the Seira rivers flow along the southern edge of the district. The district is rich in scenic landscapes. Part of its territory is taken up by the Veisiejai and Meteliai regional parks, which are most atttractive to tourists.
The oldest sites recalling the district's past are hill-fots (mounds) with their settlements, burial grounds, and manor sites. The Prelomciske, Paveisininkai, and Rudamina hill-forts bear witness to the days when the courageous and fierce Yotvingians (Sudovians) lived in the territory we now call Lazdijai district.
The largest and most beautiful of the district's forests is Kapciamiestis forest. The Pertakas and Dainava forests have been included on the list of state-protected territories. There are more than 40 countryside tourism homesteades in the district. Tourists find excellent conditions for recreation on the lakes and for enjoying the pleasures of recreation on the water and in the forest.
