Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Giełczyn

Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Giełczyn is from 1777. It was founded by Chryzanty Opacki, the castellan of Wizna. It was a votive offering for a duel which Opacki fought in a church in Wizna with Stanisław Rembieliński. In 1797 Giełczyn was passed, along with the hand of Agnieszka Opacka, Chryzanty’s daughter, to Rajmund Rembieliński. He was also a collator of the church and paid for its maintenance, because the temple did not have its own fund. For some time a friar called Hadukiewicz lived by the church. originally, the temple was a subsidiary of the parish in Wizna and belonged to the Diocese of Płock. In 1807, during the rule of the Prussian administration, the church was made a branch of the parish in Trzcianne. At the beginning of the 19th century the church was served by the Franciscan Fathers from Tykocin. An independent parish in Giełczyn was established before 1849.
In the nearby estate of Kępa Giełczyńska, which belonged to Ludwik de Fleury, Marie Skłodowska was residing as a guest in 1884. During her stay, she probably visited the temple in Giełczyn.
General renovations of the church took place in 1876, after World War I and World War II, when it was severely damaged, as well as in the years 1972-1975.
It is a wooden temple built as a log construction. The aisleless (single-nave) corps is enclosed with a three-sided chancel, flanked with low annexes – a vestry and a treasury, and enlarged with an avant-corps in the facade, holding a church-porch and a choir balcony. The roof of the church is surmounted with a slender bell-gable covered with a pyramidal dome, built in late 19th century. The interior is devoid of any historic equipment. The church in Giełczyn is one of the temples typical for borderland between Podlasie and Masovia regions, forming a group of late-Baroque, wooden, tower-less churches, represented by the ones in Kalinówka Kościelna, Kramarzewo (moved from Radziłów), Cibory Kołaczki (brought from Zawady) or Sokoły (a previous Uniate Orthodox church, moved from Tykocin).
The church does not have a belfry – three bells are hanging among the branches of a nearby horse chestnut tree, under which we can see a small wooden cross.
