Easter Eggs Museum in Lipsk

Lipsk near the Biebrza River is situated next to the Belarus boarder in neighborhood of Biebrza National Park. The town is undoubtedly an important centre of Easter egg tradition common for Pojezierze Suwalsko-Augustowskie. Those small works of art decorated by pattern typical for this region could be found on the tables and in the folk art collection all over the world.
Easter-eggs from Lipsk are decorated with hot wax applied from the head  of the shell of an egg, thus producing compositions of the rosette, sun themes, fans, chains are evenly applied on the whole surface of the egg. Formerly after the wax applying the egg was sink into natural dyes obtained from oak or alder bark often mixed with the metal fillings then boiled in stock of onion skins. These give the Easter eggs their characteristic blac or brown color.
At the begining of the 1970s the eggs was replace with Easter egg shell, and natural dyes with synthetic ones. It was also begining of creation of multi-colored Easter eggs, by popping egg in dyes of diffrent colors several times in order from the lightest to the darkest. As a rule, the last - the darkest color - was the background for a multi-colored ornament.
Since 2007 Easter eggs can be admire on the exposition. The process of making Easter egg itself can be appreciated in the museum workshop. There is also possibility to take part in egg painting under control of the artist from Lipsk. The museum also organised demonstration of making "pająki" (decoration of the interior of the house), ritual wedding cake called as a "korowaj" and Easter palms.
The museum in Lipsk is the part of ethnological "The Route Along the Folk Craft Traditions of Podlasie Province." This traditional folk handicraft route leads through the smithy and pottery workshop in Czarna Wieś Kościelna, two-warp weaving workshops in Janów and the neighboring villages and Lipsk, and traditional wooden spoon workshop in Zamczysko and also the workshop of the folk sculptor in Sokółka.
