Easter Eggs of Lipsk

Lipsk Easter Eggs are made by putting a heated wax on the egg’s shell by a thin nail or a pin. Created ornaments in the form of short lines are evolved into compositions of rosettes, motives of sun, fans, ears of cereal and chains, evenly distributed on the egg’s surface. After ornamenting with wax, eggs was dipped in natural dyes, extracted from alder or oak bark decoction mixed with chips of iron, so called “zendra”, and then it was boiled in onion scale leaves decoction. It gave the egg its characteristic black or brown colour. Some eggs were also dyed green using the young rye decoction. An egg painted with natural dyes was then hard-boiled. Melting wax exposed ornaments in the colours of the shell.
In the early 70s of the 20th century, inspired by ethnographers, decorators started to use empty shells and replace natural dyes with chemicals used in dying fabrics. A multi-coloured Easter Eggs also appeared, made by dipping the egg in different dyes (from the brightest to the darkest), adding another ornamenting after each dipping. Last, usually darkest colour was a background for the colourful ornaments. Skilled decorators perfected their skill by making thousands of Easter Eggs and learned to make true masterpieces. Wax-decorated, amazingly ornamented lasting eggshells ceased to be only a ceremonial accessory, but started to be treated as a piece of art, sought after by Polish and Foreign fans of the Easter Eggs making craft.
