Korowaj lipski wedding cake and gąski – ceremonial wedding pastry
Real wedding “Korowajs” are baked from yeast cake (flour, yeast, eggs, sugar and butter). Top part is decorated with traditional “plait”, corresponding to the bride’s plait, and motives of geese, cereal ears and birds’ nests symbolising prosperity and numerous offspring of the new family. Traditional Korowaj was baked with due ceremony by married women in a bread stove, while his size was dependant on the wealth of the bride’s family. Korowaj, forced out of wedding ceremonies by the ordinary wedding cake and forgotten for years, has returned on the wedding tables. Korowaj lipski received many awards in culinary contests, a/o in 2007 it got 1st prize in the “Our Culinary Heritage” contest. Since 2005, it is listed on the Polish List of Traditional Products.
